The inaugural Javeros de Colombia conference was held in the city of Cali Colombia on May 19th. The Javeros de Colombia is designed to provide a space for Latin American Java User Groups, education, public and private sectors to gather together and discuss the latest Java related technologies and trends like: Microservices, Cloud, Jakarta EE, Microprofile, Security, and DevOps.

The conference was organized by three Columbian JUGs from the cities: Cali @CLOJUG , Medellin @MedellinJug, and Barranquilla @JUGBAQ . Together these JUGs created an outstanding gathering with content and with speakers from all over Latin America that included Community Leaders, Open Source Advocates, Java Champions, Oracle Aces and Auth0 Ambassadors.  From the time of the first Call For Papers to after the last session of the inaugural conference, the main objective has been to: Create synergy among the Spanish speaking Java communities, generate high-quality content, and contribute to professional development and growth of Latin American Java developers.

Alberto Salazar from Ecuador JUG presented an interesting session about best practices and the complexity management learned while developing a process for migrating from monolithic to Microservice architecture. During the session, an e-banking application architecture was described and analyzed in each stage of the migration. The presentation slides are available here:

José Días from Perú JUG gave a session about Microservices Deployment with Kubernetes. The first part of the session showed the fundamental patterns for Microservice monitoring, deployment, and orchestration. The second part was a code demo that applied the patterns to two of the Kubernetes cloud providers: Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Surrounded by the beautiful mountains and warm weather of Cali, I had the opportunity to present the security talk: “Deconstructing and Evolving REST Security” and establish a two-way channel communication with the audience about  REST security concepts like Oauth2, JSON Web Tokens, and HTTP Signatures. During the demo, I ran a preview of the Microprofile JWT implementation on Apache TomEE and it’s integration with an API Gateway in a MicroService architecture. It was an amazing experience to meet, learn and share with the Colombian and Latin America Java community and plan future initiatives while hacking on code with other Java developers. Special thanks to organizers for creating a top-notch event and adding value to the Java Community.
